Write us back ASAP!!!!!!!!!!! - Lauren Paul, lucero, Mon Apr 21 09:45:31 2003 Subject: How to solve navigation problems Comments: A parent emailed me with this question: Can you give step by step instructions as to how to predict the position of the boat. Here is my answer: OK, you will need the big map, a straight long straight edge that can reach across the entire height of the map, a ruler, a pencil and a protractor. (better have an eraser handy too) On April 12, 2002 at 8:30 AM the boat was at the longitude and latitude listed below: We will also note the bearing and speed. Latitude: 27.4degreesN, Longitude: 69.4degreesW Bearing: 334° True Speed: 18 Knots FINDING POSITION (Where are we?) Beginning at the bottom (equator on your map) go to the left edge and count up the degrees (latitude) given in the left margin until you get to 27.4. Make a little pencil mark in the margin at that point. Repeat the same process on the right edge of the map. (you have marked the parallel of latitude for the ship's position) Then go to the bottom of the map beginning at the lower right-hand corner. Count toward the left until you find the place that matches 69.4 degrees W. (Numbers will increase from right to left). Repeat the same process at the top margin of the map.(you have found the meridian for the ship's position) Place a straight edge across the map at the two places you have marked 27.4N. Make a short pencil mark (horizontal) along that straight edge that will cross the meridian that you have found at 69.4W. Now place a straight edge up and down the map connecting the two places that you marked 69.4 at the upper and lower margins. The edge should cross the horizontal mark you just made and you should now draw a vertical line so that the two lines cross.(Make the vertical line long enough to use with your protractor during the next step.) The place where the lines cross is the exact position of the boat at that time. PLOTTING THE COURSE (In what direction are we going?) Place the flat side of the protractor on the line that runs north and south. The center of that side--"the origin" should be at the point of the ship's position. If your protractor is shaped like a "D" it should look like a backwards "D" for this particular course. The True Bearing, if the ship was headed due north would be 360 degrees (or 0) but ship's bearing is 334 degrees--26 degrees to the left of true north [360-26=334]. Beginning at the 0 on the top end of the protractor, count left 26 degrees and mark that point on the map at the edge of the protractor. [most protractors have two scales, one running in either direction. If your protractor has only one scale, and you find 180 at the north end, count backward 26 degrees from 180 and mark the map at 154 on the protractor.] Remove the protractor. Draw a line to connect the mark you just made to place that the lines cross to show the ship's position. The line you have drawn is the ship's course of 334 degrees. CALCULATING THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED UNTIL THE NEXT LOG ENTRY (Where will we be in 4 hours?) The ships is moving at 18 Knots which means "18 nautical miles per hour". The next log entry is at 1230 or 4 hours later than the one we have just plotted. In that time the ship will probably have travelled 18X4=72nautical miles. These miles will be probably be along the course you have just plotted (334 degrees True). We know that every degree of latitude (along a meridian) equals 60 nautical miles. Dividing 72 nautical miles by 60=1+12/60 which equals 1and1/5 or 1.2 degrees. Take your ruler to the margin on the left edge of the map which gives the degrees of latitude and measure the distance in inches (or centemeters) that matches 1.2 degrees. This is the distance that represents 72 nautical miles on your map. Measure this distance along the course line you plotted and mark the point that is 72 nautical miles from the first position. This point is your estimate of where the boat will be at 12:30. Find the latitude and longitude of that position using the reverse of the process given in "FINDING POSITION" above. Then go to our ship's log for 1230 April 12, 2002 and see how close you got. Good Luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: KMaderK@aol.com To: dicklathrop@prodigy.net Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2003 8:14 PM Subject: Formula Can I have the formula for figuring out where the boat is? I don't know how many trips we can take yet, it depends on how many students are qualified. This is not just a boatride! you will have to help sail the boat and do some navigation. The kids who we take sailing will have shown me that they have some skills as sailors and navigators. Do you two have any of these skills? For instance, if you are facing north and make a left turn, which way are you facing? It will be over on May 4. Here is how it works. I will be on a boat in the Carribian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. At 0900 hours (that's 9:00AM) I will post on the web site exactly where the boat is--using longitude and latitude. I will give you a classroom chart on which you will be able to locate the exact position of the boat. I will also tell you the direction we are moving and how fast we are moving. The nautical term for direction is "bearing" and the nautical term for how fast is "speed". With this information you will predict exactly where the boat will be at 1200 hours (that's 12:00 noon) You will send me your predictions on the discussion zone of the web site. You will state the position in latitude and longitude. Other kids in other schools will be doing this at the same time. At 1200 hours I will come on the ship's log again with exactly what our position really is. Then I will ask you to predict where the boat will be at 1500 hours (that's 3:00PM) The kids in the team that predicts closest to our real position most of the time will win a prize at the end of the contest. There also will be other challenges in this contest and other prizes. We will cross the paths of some of the explorers that you studied, We will visit many islands. We want you to share your information about these explorers and these islands with other students who are taking part in the contest. They will also share their information with you. Are you interested in taking part? - Captain Lathrop, Thu Mar 27 19:00:52 2003 Subject: The letter Comments: HI! Comments: Hello Captain Lathrop, the Mastrandrea kids do believe they have the answer= =0D to your bonus question. It took some thought and plenty of time, but we=0D managed. We calculated you crossing the Tropic of Cancer around 1714 and 30= =0D seconds local time. And we believe that your longitude at this time was 67= =BA=0D W. We will wait to see what the answer was, and will keep in touch. So lon= g=0D for now Captain lathrop.=0D - The Mastrandrea Family, Fri Apr 12 19:29:24 2002 Subject: enter Navigation Contest Comments: Go to "The voyage" and click on "Navigation Olympics or "Voyage 2002". There will be email links that you can use to give your guesses about our position and other questions. You will need a map of where we are sailing. The Waterford Library should have a map that you might be able to use. Go to our "ships log" to find out our current position. Good luck. - Captain Lathrop, Fri Apr 12 12:13:01 2002 Subject: PS Comments: This summer i am interested in sailing with you and Heather like sh e did last year. I won't be able to do it every day but when i get the chance i would love to join you two. Heather would probally like the extra help plus i will get sailing lessons. If not its ok no biggy. Happy Sailing! - "wild5", Thu Apr 11 20:44:20 2002 Subject: your coordinates at 8:30am EST Comments: We have determined after much difficulty and debate and a lot of giddiness for being up way p ast our bedtime that you better be at our coorinates! ;} we have roughly Lat. 22.1ºN Long. 67.8ºW It is not the only set of coordinates we came up with. The other set has you on a straighter course for Burmuda., but this is the one we decided to give you. Although we had a third set that put you in the middle of Lake Superior by Sunday. We unanimously ditched those:) We are looking forward to the bonus question!!! ZZZzzzzz for now, Mas...kids - The Mastrandrea Family, Thu Apr 11 20:42:18 2002 Subject: Answering Flea Comments: Well, that is one message full of questions. As for the fish questions, that one is easy. We haven't seen any saltwater fish yet. We'll keep a good lookout. But there is some info about fish on our site--see Marine Science Discussion. AS for the Tropic of Cancer--you tell me if we've crossed it yet. There is a special prize in store for the closest guess as to exactly w hen we cross the tropic of cancer and exactly at what longitude we cross it. Tell Ellis to put on his thinking cap and figure it out. The map on our web site might help. So will our ship's log. Good luck to you and your tribe. Talk to you later BYE from EVERY McGarryBODY :) - flea, Thu Apr 11 17:49:39 2002 Subject: daylight sa vings time Comments: Tyler Thanks for joining our voyage and entering our Discussion Zone. I think you've got it right about Daylight Savings Time. Because of the way the earth orbits the sun and because of the tilt of the e arth on its axis, some regions experience a big difference in the length of daylght at different times. Regions close to the Equator, however do not experience this big variation in the length of daylight, it doesn't change much throughout the year. They don't need Daylight Savings Time. What can you tell me about the Tropic of Cancer. We'll be on it soon and I want to know what to expect. Captain Lathrop - Captain Lathrop, Wed Apr 10 16:12:06 2002 Subject: Tropical topics Comments: I think there is no daylight savings because the Virgin Islands are too close to the equator and that is where sun shines most. I am a fourth grader that is 9 years old and I am homeschooled in Waterford. - Tyler Wild, Wed Apr 10 14:04:42 2002 Subject: Hello Mast... kids Comments: Thanks for joining our contest and for your question on our discussion zone. The contest begins Thursday, but you shou ld practice tracking the voyage right away. Greenwich is in England. I don't know the latitude of Greenwich, but the longitude is easy. It's 0. Take any map or globe of the world and look for 0 degrees longitude. The line will cross the Equator , which is 0 degrees latitude. When you find where the lines cross, follow O degrees longitude north until you get to England, and you will find Greenwich. That's the reference point for all longitude in the world and it is the first time zone. When the s un is highest (at noon) in Greenwich the time there is exactly 1200 hours or "12 noon". The time where you live is 4 hours earlier than that, because the sun hasn't risen that high at your house. We use Greenwich time because that time is "univ ersal". local times vary. Check our ship's log and watch tonight for the log entry of the passage from St. Thomas to St. Maarten. Captain Lathrop - Captain Lathrop, Mon Apr 8 16:18:38 2002 Subject: n avigation olympics Comments: Thankyou for the map, we will start tracking today. It is Monday, April 8, 2002-A.D. We would like to kowhow to sign up for the olympics. Our mom can't find Grenich on the map and would like to know the lat lo ng that she could use to help her. - Mastrandrea kids, Mon Apr 8 15:45:35 2002 Subject: Discussion with Henry Comments: Henry, thanks for entering the discussion zone. Also check out the log entry for the trip (scroll back to 10/9). The only thing I want to add is that the position of the boat was given in latitude and longitude as read on our GPS. The team on the shore found that position on a chart (you called it a map) and plotted our journey. - Captain Lathrop, Mon Oct 15 20:44:30 2001 Subject: Captain Lathrop and isaac's trip Comments: On our last trip we split up into 2 groups one group on the boat the other on land. The group on the boat left and the group on landwatched them through the bonoculars when they reached the first bouy the g roup on land called them and recorded there position and other information. They called the boat every 20 minutes after that. Finnaly after the group on the boat got back they were shown on there map there exact location. - Henry, Mon Oct 15 17:50:41 2001 Subject: Jason's discussion zone writing Comments: Jason, Thank you for your three messages on our web site discussion zone. You showed me that you really understood how channel marking buoys work and what the colors and numbers mean. The re is one other way that some of the buoys (not all)on one side of the channel are different from those on the other. color--odd or even number---BLANK After our next sail, maybe you can fill in the blank! I also liked your m entioning the Ledge Lighthouse, the Eagle, and Ernie. Find out if there is an Eagle web site, that may tell us why the eagle was anchored there last week. I am trying to get kids in lots of different ports to write about their lighthouses. If y ou could tell the story of Ernie on my web site, maybe we could get some other ghost stories from other ports too. After all, it is Halloween! - Captain Lathrop, Tue Oct 9 07:41:19 2001 Subject: Thanks Comments: Captain Lathrope, Thank you so much for taking us sailing on your boat down the Thames River. I learned a real lot about the basic skills of sailing. Tying knots, steering, and rigging the sails were only some things. Thanks so much. I look foward to next weeks sail!!! - Jason, Mon Oct 8 20:24:46 2001 Subject: Russell knows knots Comments: Russell's story of our sail left out one important part. He is an expert at tying bowlines and square knots. And he is going to teach the others on the crew to tie them before next week's sail. If you ne ed help, go to the sailing skills section of our web site. Capt. L. - Captain Lathrop, Thu Oct 4 20:28:43 2001 Subject: Fun on the ship Comments: On our trip sailing Russell 10/3/01 we walked down to the new london docks from our school ISAAC. When we got there captain L told us a little about what we would be doing then we pu t on our life jackets and walked down to the boat. My partner Jason and I had to launch Squeezy Wind the life boat that would trail behind us. We had to un tie the hold ropes and then pushed it over then tied it to the stern of the boat. We then turned on the blower to empty the hull of any fumes that might light up then we started off the first one to drive was DJ he drove out to the number 11 channel marker. We learned that all green markers were odd numbers and all red were even. Then marcus took the w heel now under full sail power he headed us towards the eagle coast guard ship. After a time Henry took the wheel he drove like a pro heading right for the coast guard ship. Then came the turn we headed in the other direction we had to switch the sail in to the wind which required a lot of teamwork. This is when i started to drive it was hard at first but i got the hang of it. next Jason drove he was really good. then came Charlotte she looked like she had done this before. Then came Mr. David when he was driving captain L was taking a picture of us all and mr. david lost control but got it back. When we pulled in to the docks Mr. david had to hook a rope hold. Jason and I had to pull up squeezy wind and tie it down it was so much fun that i wish i did no t have to leave I hope I can go back again. - Russell, Thu Oct 4 14:49:00 2001 Subject: ship's log Comments: Linda, Thanks for your message. Linda - Linda, Thu Mar 8 18:45:52 2001 Subject: Answering Cathy VO Comments: Dear Cathy, Nice to hear from you. Your comments are really INTERACTIVE, which is what we are trying to be. Let's hope we can get linked with LISEC and magnify our interactivity. The kids in Port Jefferson produced some of the most interesting and creative projects we saw during Voyage 2000. For example, one student made a wind tunnell complete with a sailplane that demonstrated how sails (and airplane wings) work. Another showed us the history of ships built in Port Jefferson (along with the details of those ships). Please help us get some of this information up on our site. Ms. wind tunnell could enter her info in the "Sailing and Navigaiton" section. The other project belongs i n "seafaring people and their boats". Help us crank up some interaction! By the way, do you know the coordinates of the world's largest iceburg or the size of the smallest boat in the world currently used in trade? (I'm sure you do!) Happy Blizzard, Captain Lathrop - Captain Lathrop, Sun Mar 4 15:28:19 2001 Subject: website Comments: Hi Dick, The site is looking great!!! I was also looking for a link to the old information with the photos but I know how tough it is to get it all online. A new letter and follow-up letter from the original partipants is the best way to go. I was skimming through the site and just said to myself, this is a great resource for teachers and students I'd like to try to learn it myself but I'd need a quiz to keep me "on course". With my next click I saw that was exactly what was planned! The extra help you have received must be very encouraging. I am in the process of adding links to our website and I can't wait to have your site added. We will keep in touch wit h Betty to see when you will be in Port Jefferson. Did you confirm with Oyster Bay? Do you get involved with the New York State Marine Educators Conference? I hope to bring an exhibit. It's on June 8-10 at Southhampton College. I will include any info we gather about VV. I am so glad to see the additions to the site. And I'm very motivated to get our Harbor Guide online asap. Check www.lisec.org to see updates. Good luck - Can't wait till spring! Cathy VO - Cathy VO, Sun Mar 4 10:47:40 2001 Subject: old site/new site Comments: Hi Kelly and Kyra! It is great to hear from you, even though it is a complaint! I am pleased to know that you are still checking the web site. Would you tell the story of how we got Virtual Voyages started at the South Shore Charter School? Then I could put the story and some of the pictures from the old site on the new site. We need kids to write stuff and you are the right kids to get it all started. Let me know where you are going to school now and what you are doing. Some of it can just be done by email; we don’t have to post everything on the site. But I would like you to write about how we got started. We will definitely post that! Thanks for writing.
