LESSON I: THE VHS RADIO

On board Easy Wind we have a radio on which we can both receive and transmit messages. The radio can operate on a number of different channels. It also receives continuous weather broadcasts. This radio is an important safety device.

While sailing we keep the radio on and tuned to channel 16. All boats listen to this channel. If a boat needs help, it contacts the Coast Guard or another source of help on channel 16. Shortly after the Coast Guard replies, they will suggest a switch to some other channel to keep channel 16 open for other emergencies.

The channel for talking with other boats is channel 13. This is also used to contact the operators of drawbridges when you want them to open the bridge. Each marina or boating club along the coast has a particular channel for contact. These are listed in cruising guides.

The radio has a "push to talk" button to be used when you want to transmit a message. There are some important things to remember about using a radio. First, it is only for business, no chitchat. Second, when you speak on the radio, everyone tuned in to that channel can hear your conversation-not just the person you are calling. Don't say anything you wouldn't want everyone listening to hear. Third, keep transmissions as brief as possible. Be clear and figure out exactly what you want to say before pushing the PTT button.
