Palm Beach) by about 4 PM, missing a torrential downpour by only an hour or so.

travelled all the way to Titusville that night. At noon we were approaching Datona Beach in the waterway. We went on well after dark in order to reach Titusville for the shuttle launch, scheduled for 1 AM on the 11th. The nighttime trek through the narrow dredged channel in Mosquito Lagoon, through Haulover Canal and then across the upper portions of the Indian River were not difficult because they are well marked with lighted buoys. The difficulty was in missing the unlighted daymarks between the lighted buoys, but our spotlights did a fine job for us and the dredging must have been quite recent, because it was not difficult staying in deeper waters. We did encounter the dredge and some long lengths of moored spoil pipe at the bridges in Indian River which were interesting to avoid, however.

we were offshore at the latitude of Jekyl Island, I think. We took a bucket temperature. There was an extensive swarm of jellyfish which we sailed through over the course of an hour or so. Don't know the variety, yet. Like Lion's Manes, but not the long trailing streamers. Just a dense, clipped frill. About 3.5 in across, I would guess, and fairly uniform size throughout the swarm. Bob tried to get one in the bucket, but although they were near the surface, they were too deep for losing the bucket, probably down 8-12 inches. Saw only one shearwater

From Fishing Creek, SC to Palmer Johnson Marina, Thunderbolt, GA, passing over the GA state line at 1545. ICW st.m 575.7. Thunderbolt is part of the southern outskirts of Savannah, GA. During the day we passed Beaufort, SC (same spelling as Beaufort, NC, but in SC it is pronounced Bu-fort, not Bow-fort) . An ex-marine might know the area as near the infamous Parris Island marine boot camp. The city is a beautiful old southern town with large antebellum type mansions lining the waterfront along a bend in the river. Day's run was 71.1 nm. Air temperatures were up to 73F in the cockpit. Water temp was 63.4. We will be staying in this marina in Thunderbolt for a few days to make some needed repairs to Xapisma. We are 1157 nm from home at 32.25N, 081.05W.

There is a huge wildlife sanctuary set aside there. Day's log was 66 nm. Sunny and warm. We apparently missed the cold temperatures coming across behind us.

This day we passed the 400 st.m marker (ICW) from Norfolk and a few miles later we logged 1000 cumulative nautical miles from New London. Our average speed for the voyage to date was 7.0 kt, so you can calculate how many underway hours it had taken. Day's log was 56.0 nm. (We had a very good push down the Waccamaw River, sometimes up to 9 kt, so this mileage "through the water" may be a little low

Easy Wind and Xapiema are docked at the Thames Yacht Club and 21 boys and girls from Nathan Hale School walked down here and came aboard for a visit.
Felix, Achelito, DeJon, Ashley, J.C. Demetri, Lucy, Ryan, Bianca, Olga, Danisha, Samiyra, Tnasia, Giovanni, Sharandah, Lauren, Paul, M.S. and Shaniece all signed the guest book.
Did I spell everyone's name right?
Some of the students asked great questions. For example, how does the depth sounder (the instrument on the boat that shows the depth of the water)know how deep the water is?
Some of the students have already entered our web site discussion zone with some questions about a deer I saw one day swimming across the Thames River.
You can learn a little more about this deer by going to our log of Voyage 2000. I saw the deer in May.
Hats off to all today's visitors, the kids and especially the teachers
and teacher's helpers who walked from the school to the Thames Yacht Club to visit the boat.

this log entry is coming from my home office. If we're lucky, we can make another one later today from the boat. Our log template gives longitude and latitude in degrees and tenths of a degree so that is the way I have entered it. This requires a conversion from minutes which is what we have been using on our GPS. I am about 41 degrees 18 minutes North. there are sixty minutes in a degree so I am 18 out of those sixty minutes above 41. Since 18 is three tenths of sixty, I am 41.3 degrees North.
If you have our big map of the Atlantic Ocean, Find the location of the following two tropical storms and track them on the map. It will be good practice in using latitude and longitude and, besides, we don't want to sail through them when we start south in XAPEMA next Saturday:
Kyle
Lili
they will give the coordinates in tenths of a degree.
Thanks,

Hello all voyagers, parents, teachers and others:
This is an update on what is going on with this site.
If you go to Nathan Hale School; St. Mary, Star of the Sea School; The Waterford Country School; or a homeschool in the New London area you may already be part of our Fall project.
Some of these groups sail aboard EASY WIND for about 2 hours once a week. These kids are doing science projects and they will use data they collect on their sailing trips to create an exhibit in their clasrooms (or homeschools) and maybe for a SCIENCE FAIR that we will hold in December.
One aspect of this project is to record air temperature and water temperature and see how they are changing as Fall approaches.
This information should be kept on a graph. Right now, air and water are about the same temperature, but as winter approaches they will no longer be the same. Can you predict which temperature(air or water will fall the fastest between now and December 22?)
For the purposes of this activity we are using Minimum Air temperature. The newspaper records Maximum and Minimum. If you are recording your own air temperature, just be sure you use the same thermometer and the same time each day.
The other project is a profile of the bottom of the Thames River at a given latitude. Yesterday we collected data for this profile at the latitude of New London Harbor Lighthouse (Latitude 41degrees 19 minutes North). Starting as near as we could safely get to the lighthouse, we sailed due West (true) and recorded our longitude every time the depth increased by one foot.
Send me a message through our Discussion Zone to let me know how your work on this project is coming or to let me know that you would like to join in these efforts.

This morning at 0630 I took a swim in Long Island Sound. The weather was perfectly still, the tide very low, the water warm but refreshing.
The sun was like a big yellow ball in the East, rising through a thick haze. Bait fish were rising to the surface. Bluefish or bass must have been chasing them. All elso was sill.
Today at 1030 hours we sailed with Heather, Ryan and Cramer from the YMCA. Beth came along as their leader. These kids all took part in sailing the boat and we made great progress upwind toward New London Ledge Light before we had to tun around and head back.

Voyage 2002 in Easy Wind began July 1 and we have been sailing short trips with students from Waterford Country School, the YMCA, and Salvation Army summer program. These trips go from 1 and a half to two hours each.
Today we sailed with 5 campers from the Salvation Army Summer program. They all took a turn at steering and handling the sails, but had the most fun being "rail meat" in the gusty conditions.
Mates aboard the boat this year are Tom and Sawyer (Sawyer has been an active participant in our "discussion zone" and "navigation olympics") One or the other sails with me when each group comes on board and when we do not have groups they help maintain the boat.

This is the first entry of the Navigation Olympics. I am loading the data on to the web site at about 0950 hours, a little over an hour since the data was actually collected. This delay was caused by a computer glitch on board the ship. In the future, I hope to have the log entries posted within minutes of when they are actually taken. I am sorry for the delay.
The only thing it should affect is the time you have to calculate our next position about an hour and a half from now.

Tortola, the port in which we are spending the day, is part of the British Virgin Islands.
The islands all seem to be steep mountains, rising abruptly out of the sea. This presents a spectacular sight from the sea, and even more spectacular when standing high on one of these mountains and looking out to sea.
Guess what the main industry used to be in Jamacia before tourism took over.
Captain Lathrop.
