Rain, for and high winds made us cancel sailing today. First Mate Tom and Captain Lathrop visited the Drop In Learning Center in New London to recruit additional deck hands for future voyages.
There we met with Loona and her teammate Princess, Depp and his teammate Patchy, and Black Beard with his teammate Blue\Blue. (These are screen names, not the kidsí real names).
We had borrowed some cleats and bought some line from Boaterís World Marine Center and we wanted to see how fast these swabs could learn a few knots and sailing terms.
They all caught on fast to the skill of cleating a line. While they were learning how to tie a Figure 8 knot, Loona showed us that she already knew it and could also tie a square knot.
We jumped forward to the square knot. Blue\Blue kept tying granny knots instead. But, in the end all the recruits learned to tie a square knot and could tell the difference between a square knot and a granny knot.
Tom and I left while they were still learning the bowlineóthe hardest of all knots learned today.
I canít wait to see Loona, Princess, Depp, Patchy, Black Beard and Blue\Blue aboard the boat next week to begin teaching them some sailing skills and to see which knots they remember.
Go to the Sailing Skills section of our web site to learn more knot-tying and cleatng skills.
